Textbook Information

How do I know which textbooks to buy?
Bring a copy of your schedule with you to avoid confusion. The textbook shelves are arranged alphabetically by department and numerically within the department. The shelves have labels indicating course number and section number. Buy only the books for your section.

Are used textbooks available?
Yes! We increase the number of used textbooks we offer every year to meet the demand and keep costs down for students.

Are rental textbooks available?
Yes! We are committed to offering our students every option to save money on course materials.

What if a textbook is out of stock?
If the shelf is empty, students can fill out a "Special Order Form". Most special orders arrive within 2 to 4 business days. All special orders must be prepaid and are non-returnable.

What is the store's textbook return policy?

  1. Two things are required for every textbook return: a University Store receipt and a student's word that a class has been dropped.
  2. The undergraduate returns deadline is the Friday of the first week of classes, concurrent with the University Registrar's drop/add deadline. The law returns deadlines are: 1L's-2L's: end of second week of the semester; 3L's: end of first week of classes (following the 2-week immersion).
  3. Shrink-wrapped books or bundles are non-returnable once opened.
  4. A refund is issues in the same form as original payment.

Why do I need a drop/add form to return a book?
The University Store, following the lead of college stores across the country, allows students to return books if they have dropped a class. This policy exists for a number of reasons.

  1. Some students buy books for a class in which they are not registered, hoping to add into the class and plan to return the books if they are not successful. This takes a book away from the students who are actually registered in the class who may have to special order the book and wait until it arrives.
  2. Some students plan to buy the books online and use copies from the University Store until the books they ordered online arrive. We urge you to consider all the factors in choosing your source for textbooks—cost, convenience, reliability, availability and accuracy—and encourage you to support your University by purchasing your books on campus, but we do not function as a rental service outside of our available rental titles. If you plan on buying the course materials online, from a friend, or from another source, you simply cannot buy them at the store and return them later.

The policy is in the spirit of fairness to ALL students; we apply it evenly. Our academic mission is to serve the students of Washington and Lee by providing the right books, in the right edition, at the right time, at the lowest possible price that the market allows. Our returns policy is essential in allowing us to achieve this mission.

Can I sell my books back?
Yes. The University Store sponsors a buyback on campus at the end of each term as well as an online buyback available year-round at http://go.wlu.edu/buybacknow. You get cash for your books and future students are offered more money-saving used books.

How does the University arrive at the buyback price?
If the book is going to be used again in course and a professor commits to use the same edition we pay up to 50% of the new price for your book! If we have not received a commitment, the value of the book is determined by the used book company conducting the buyback on our behalf.
