Textbook Information

Top
- How do I know which textbooks to buy?
Bring a copy of your schedule with you to avoid confusion. The textbook shelves are arranged alphabetically by department and numerically within the department. The shelves have labels indicating course number and section number. Buy only the books for your section.

- Are used textbooks available?
Yes! In the past three years, we have doubled our offerings of used textbooks to help meet the demand and keep costs down for students.

- What if a textbook is out of stock?
If the shelf is empty, students can fill out a "Special Order Form". Most special orders arrive within 2 to 4 business days. All special orders must be prepaid and are non-returnable.

- What is the store's textbook return policy?
  1) The returns deadline is 2 days after drop/add ends for the semester.
  2) In order to make a return, you MUST have your original receipt, along with a drop/add form showing that you have dropped the class,
  3) Shrink-wrapped books or bundles are non-retrunable once opened.
  4) Refunds must be in the same form as original payment.

- Why do I need a drop/add form to return a book?
The University Store, following the lead of college stores across the country, only allows students to return books if they have decided to drop the class. This policy exists for a number of reasons.
  1) Some students buy the books for a class in which they are not registered, hoping to add into the class. They plan to simply return the books if they are not successfully added into the class. However, this takes a book away from the students who are actually registered in the class. These students then have to special order the book and wait until it arrives.
  2) Some students plan to buy the books online, but use the books from the University Store until the books they ordered online arrive. We are not a rental service. If you plan on buying the course textbooks online, from a friend, or from another source, you simply cannot buy them at the store and return them later.
The policy is in the spirit of fairness to ALL students. We apply it evenly. Our academic mission is to serve the students of Washington and Lee by providing the right books, in the right edition, at the right time, at the lowest possible price that the market allows. Our returns policy is essential in allowing us to achieve this mission.

- Can I sell my books back?
Yes. The University Store sponsors a buyback at the end of each term. You get cash for your books and future students are offered money saving used books.

- How does the store arrive at the buyback price?
If the book is being used again and the store has received an adoption from the professor, we can pay 50% of the new price for your book. If we have not received an adoption, the value of the book is determined by the used book distributor.
