The Lexington Letters

The Lexington Letters
Doug Cumming
In the old Southern town of Lexington, Virginia, letters to the editor stretch from last week's News Gazette back to 1804. Student researchers at Washington and Lee University sought out as many of those letters as they could, indexing more than 8,000 and transcribing about 1,400. This rich material was turned into a play that premiered at the Theater at Lime Kiln. With hundreds more published here, along with the original script, the voices of the Valley speak again, glints of gold out of the creek bed of Time.

The Horse in Virginia: An Illustrated History

The Horse in Virginia: An Illustrated History
Julie A. Campbell, Associate Director of Communications and Public Affairs
Virginia's horse tradition goes back 400 years, to when horses accompanied some of the first settlers in Jamestown. Since then, the state's special relationship with the horse has never waned. Virginia has been home to some of the most notable breeds in the world as well as to some of the most famous individual horses, including the great Triple Crown champion Secretariat and Misty of Chincoteague, one of the most beloved horses in all of children's literature. This is the first book to cover the complete history of the horse in the Old Dominion. The book is beautifully illustrated throughout, including numerous historical depictions of the horse by painters, photographers, and even commercial artists. Hardback. The Good Daughter

The Good Daughter
Jasmin Darznik, Assistant Professor of English
Jasmin Darznik came to America from Iran when she was only three years old, and she grew up knowing very little about her family's history. When she was in her early twenties, on a day shortly following her father's death, Jasmin was helping her mother move; a photograph fell from a stack of old letters. The girl pictured was her mother. She was wearing a wedding veil, and at her side stood a man whom Jasmin had never seen before. At first, Jasmin's mother, Lili, refused to speak about the photograph, and Jasmin returned to her own home frustrated and confused. But a few months later, she received from her mother the first of ten cassette tapes that would bring to light the wrenching hidden story of her family's true origins in Iran: Lili's marriage at thirteen, her troubled history of abuse and neglect, and a daughter she was forced to abandon in order to escape that life. The final tape revealed that Jasmin's sister, Sara--the Good Daughter--was still living in Iran.
