The Ones We Have

The Ones We Have
Leah Naomi Green, Visiting Assistant Professor of English
Leah Naomi Green's The Ones We Have turns a trenchant and beautifully observant eye to how we humans build our worlds-worlds both beautiful and dangerous, made up of the only seemingly simple. A family in the Dominican Republics drinks a can of soda "not made from what was possible here," their flickering television "taking the walls on and off the room" (" Beningo Street-Son" and "Beningo Street-Wife"). Relationship is precious, in Green's vision, and hard won: "The way that wasps make nests/we are making love: slowly,/unmistakably, and by instinct, using/whatever we land on" ("Nest"). These poems, their lyric intensity and tender power, will change the way you look at the smallest stuff of your life, and give you a vocabulary for saying, This life is never easy, but it is always worth it.

The Receptionist and Other Tales

The Receptionist and Other Tales
Lesley Wheeler, Henry S. Fox Jr. Professor of English
Gwyneth Jones, author of Spirit and The Universe of Things writes: Lesley "Wheeler's The Receptionist is a delight: a stirring narrative of fantasy and derring-do, set in the ivy-clad towers and poky offices of modern academia, in which the warrior princess of an ancient line returns to the fray at last and summons ancient powers to defend the right, all told in technically assured terza rima cantos, full of ingenious rhythms. The forces of evil are all too recognizable, the bad guys satisfyingly bad and the good guys not too goody-goody. The infusion of classic children's fantasy, and other bedtime folklore sources, is wonderful too. In the bonus package of shorter poems, "Zombie Thanksgiving" (T.S. Eliot's "The Waste Land" retold) is stunning, an absolute tour de force." Ursula K. Le Guin, author of Lavinia and Cheek by Jowl, writes: "How much Modernism deprives us of when it declared both the fantastic in fiction and the narrative in poetry unrespectable, and what a pleasure it is now to see the exiled witches and the forbidden rhymes return. Where can an evil Dean meet his doom more fitly than in terza rima? Lesley Wheeler's brief novel of misbehaviour in academia, subtle and funny, rashly inventive and perfectly realistic, uses all the forgotten powers of metaphor and poetry to make the mundane luminous."

Laura Brodie, Visiting Assistant Professor of English
What does a woman do when she's thirty-nine, childless, and completely alone for the first time in her life? Is she crazy if she sees her husband standing beside a display of plastic pumpkins? Or is that a natural response to grief that will diminish in time? Sarah McConnell's friends told her that it was normal; her glimpses of her husband would last a season and then fade away. But what if there was another answer? After all, his body had never been found. What if he was real? Or real in some way she couldn't yet understand?
